I am the teaching assistant for Poli 147B: Russian-American Relations (Spring 2017, with Professor Phil Roeder) in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego (CA). Political Science 147B is an overview of contemporary Russian-American relations. In this class, we first let students write a policy briefing, and record an oral presentation on the issue they choose. Upon receiving feedback on the initial draft and the presentation, students incorporate the feedback into their final policy memorandum. This is our attempt to (1) improve active learning in a large university classroom, (2) to maximize opportunities through which students can get feedback from the teaching staff, and (3) to ensure that the skills students learn in the classroom can transfer to the real world. In the teaching evaluation conducted by UC San Diego, 91.7% of the students said that they will “recommend this course overall” to other students.
